Hello:

I'm sorry to bring up a question regarding rather outdated equipment, but my chat with the people at Motorola proved a waste of time and bandwidth.

In any event, my guess is that the collective knowledge of this forum may have more information and data than a well intentioned but lacking Motorola employee.

The problem at hand is as follows:

I have a Motorola V3.
Not my fav choice but ...

I also have a Palm IIIxe, actually three of them in different grades of health.

Although dated it does just what I need, runs on rechargeable AAAs and servicing it with my spare parts cache is quite inexpensive.

I also have a Palm 33.6 modem to go with it but many a time I find I need to send mail or faxes but don't have a land line to hook it up.

As a posible solution, I'd like to see about using my V3 as a modem in the very same way I have used it with my desktop PC when the web connection went south.

In the past, I have been able to connect both a Hewlett Packard 200LX and a Palm III to the web using a (very expensive) Motorola cable to connect them to my older (and much missed) StarTac 7657 (CDMA) phone, but that is no longer an available option as my carrier gave up on CDMA.

I can also connect the Palm IIIxe to my desktop PC via a RS232/USB adaptor.

So the question is:

Has anyone out there ever managed to connect a Palm III series organiser to the web via a Motorola Razr V3 or any other cell phone with a USB connector?

I think there was a cable for doing just that but Motorola has not been able to provide me with any information with respect to it (Motorola part SKN6320), only that it is 'obsolete' and that they "... don't have information or manuals available for obsolete products."

Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

Best regards,

M.

I do not have a lot of expertise with this setup but others here do: http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=bluetooth_and_wifi&message.id=13403&query.id=5844#M13403

Unfortunately, the III series does not have BlueTooth, so pairing won't work.   :smileysad:

Your biggest hurdle in this setup is going to be your cell carrier!  Who is it?   Most (if not all) have ended DUN support for their phones.  I used to connect my IIIc to an older Sony Ericsson T68i via IrDA (Infra-red) to go online, but the phone had an IrDA port on it too.  I used a DUN connection with Cingular, but they have ended this option.  It still might work with their GPRS options now.

Have you upgraded the IIIxe to PalmOS 4.1?  That gains a lot of network support.  I also connected via a cable to several phones and external modems using a Serial Data Cable into the phone/ a null modem / and a Serial Hotsync Cable connected to my Palm device.   If you could find a Serial Data Cable that will fit the V3, it might work.

I don't recall if the Razr has an IR port...?

Hello thepoeta15 and WyreNut:

First of all, thanks a lot for taking the time to chip in.
Much appreciated.

Quite so ...
On one hand RS-232 to Bluetooth dongles are a rather expensive proposition which may not even work, as Palm implemented a non-standard implementation of DTR in the Palm III series port, ie.: 3.0 volts in normal mode (instead of 0.0v) and 6.0 volts in Hotsync mode. On the other hand, the object to this 'experiment' is to avoid using additional and expensive hardware while keeping my much loved PIIIxe.

It's a local carrier ('local' to me is Buenos Aires, AR).
That's not a problem, at least for the time being.
Like I mentioned in my post, I can 'dial up' to my ISP with my desktop PC using the V3 (GSM) and the USB data cable, using it in lieu of a regular modem. I am not using the GPRS option so there are no extra 'data' charges (as far as I know).

I'd say that the biggest hurdle is to be able to match the Palm IIIxe's serial port voltage levels and the V3's mini-USB port's voltage levels.

Yes, first thing I did.

No luck ...
It seems there was one (not confirmed) but to date I have not been able to find such an animal.
And Motorola has been of no help at all.

No, the V3 does not have IR, just USB and Blootooth.

Any further input will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

M.
