Okay, I don't know where I read this- I searched the forum & obviously I am not hitting the right string of words, so I'm just gonna ask it. Is there really no color coding ability on the Pre's built in calendar? I know that Outlook & Google allow you to color code your information so once you sync with Pre, what happens to those colors? Will it erase them, ignore them? My entire schedule is (sadly, geekily) color coded & if the Pre doesn't allow me to categorize from the phone, I may rethink my position on the waiting list at my local store. I'd love your input. Thank you! Post relates to: Treo 680 (Unlocked GSM) Message Edited by kempette on 06-10-2009 02:30 PM

So I would need one calendar for myself, one for each of my kids, one for my husband, one for the family as a whole? I guess my brain just doesn't think this way. If I used Chapura to sync with Outlook then, none of that color coding would transfer because I have multiple colors in one calendar, correct? On the Pre I'd need to separate them each out. I think form wise, & few of the features, really sound so amazing, but the calendar is one of the main features I need & more & more I'm thinking this is not going to work... ugh. I think I might be glad I waited & didn't jump in last week. If the calendar & contacts were as smooth as I need them to be, this would be my phone today.

I do understand that HardBeatZ- at least I think I do. But, that will only work properly if you sync up with google calendar, correct? Once I bring a third party app in to sync with Outlook it won't work properly again I'm assuming. I'd prefer to stay with Outlook & not use google calendar which is one of the reasons that I have this question. I do understand that "calendars are the new categories," so to speak (though I also think it's kind of an extra step going no where); that leaves me with the option of one calendar with no colors/categories- just guessing as I don't know for sure & don't have a Pre yet to play with- or making the jump to the google calendar which, regardless of it being the future of all things, is a place I don't want to be. Right?

Outlook will syncwith Google Calendars. I do it all the time and it works fine. HardBeatZ is right, it's not nearly as complicated as it sounds. Just think of the separate google calendars as the individual categories. The two are synonymous. The benefit of this is that you can then share YOUR personal agenda with anyone you please, and not have to worry about filtering out everything else. I use one calendar for myself, one for my two kids (combined), one for work, one for vacations, one for my son's Cub Scouts, and a couple more. If I only want to see my work schedul, and nothing else, I only view that calendar. My wife shares her personal and work calendars with me so I can view them onmy calendar, but I can't make changes. They come over to my Pre, too. The only complaint I have on this is that the Pre should offer more color selections. I'm running out as it is. I would suggest that you try out Google Calendar online (http://google.com/calendar) and get a feel for it. It's free after all, and you can always delete your account if you choose not to use it. Good luck! Kevin

Ok, so in typical palm fashion, they innovate pretty well, but destroy the other 18 basic functions that got them there... So what everyone is saying is, move all your calendar categories to google and make your categories different calendars. Yes I understand. However, the original question was and still is, why can I not keep the same color coding in Outlook of my categories into my calendar with the Pre? Take for instance my wife who belongs to different committees for work and personal, (Budget, Finance, Enrollment, Homecoming etc.) Why would you destroy this functionality? Oh yes, and the 18 other basic steps neglected on the Palm Pre? --ringers for different messages (email, text, phone) --visual notification while phone is in standby --no adobe flash (my centro was faster on the net, and could handle animation) That's all for now.

I would like to point out that this new mindset, albeit cool and valuable, does not meet the original capabilities of the device nor match Outlook. The best example I have, personally, is that I color code my Corp meetings based on whether they are on-site withe a customer, a conference call (webex) with a customer, or will require travel over night. At a glance I can see, based on colors, whether a new meeting will work based on whether the ones around it are calls, on-sites, or travel... to accomplish that the Google/nuvo-Palm way would be unsupportable. This IS lost functionality that has been in Palm since color was added to the devices... and it will be missed.
