I have a corrupted address/contact list which I have accumulated over about 7 years and which had contained about 1500 contacts with lots of important detail.
It happened about 3 weeks ago when I attempted a routine sync that I had successfully done with this unit many, many times. This time, however, after the sync, over a thousand "unfiled" entries appeared on my handheld, with all of them blank. My contact list was fine for the entries "A" through "H", but everyone beyond the letter "H" had disappeared. I removed the "unfiled" entries and took the handheld to my second home's computer and tried to sync it with no success. The 2nd desktop also lost all of the "I" thru "Z" addresses. The calendar has had no problems.
The only software addition was the installation of Roboform, a software that keeps track of all my passwords and ID's. I did not deliberately install the Roboform data on the Palm system, but apparently it communicated with the Palm and it may be the cause of the data loss.
I had backed up my Palm data on an external hard drive and also to a flash drive unit, so I think that I have a backup that has not been synchronized with the handheld and thus the original data may be in tact. I have tried to import the address data from these sources but only a few entries transfer.
Can someone guide me through the correct steps to import my backup data? Also can I avoid going back to an old calendar backup file since I have many recent entries in this area? I would like to only import the old addresses since I have lost over 700 entries. Also, how do I eliminate that possible Roboform data from my Palm system?
Thanks for helping me. I would really appreciate any guidance that you could give to me.

I had exactly the same problem today with my Zire 72. I saw my Palm address book on the computer missing a lot of addresses. I proceed to hot synch my palm hoping it will restore the address books. Now the addresses are missing on both the computer and the Palm. I first tried a soft reset without luck. Then I read one of these posts that show me how to import the datas into my Palm by going to my Palm folder on my computer and try to import the "address.bak" file. However, when I tried to import the file, the icon did not appear on the selection box. Can someone show me the way? Thanks. Benjamin

I have lost half my contact list, H through Z, for the second time. Without realizing there was an issue of some sort, I synced my Treo 755p with the desktop data base... and lost the same H-Z contacts on the handheld! The only thing I could figure out, on my own, was to rebuild the data base by memory, e-mail directory and other lists. Now that it has happened again, I'm afraid to handheld writes over desktop sync or any other steps without solid advice. The sequence of events: I synced both desktop and handheld before leaving on a business trip. I left desktop open, but did not check the contact list. Desktop was left open for my wife to use. She updated some calendar dates, but nothing else. Upon returning home, I opened the contact list to add new info. The calendar is in place, but the H-Z contacts are gone. There are many blank lines above the first A listing. The problem exists in all three order forms - last name/first name, first name/last name, Company/last name. My 755p has the complete contact directory and a few new ones. I've found similar lost data issues (this one seems identical), but none of the solutions work or even match the files and folders in my XP Pro. For example, in Control Panel's Palm file, there is no View option. There is one icon labled address.old, 1kb, with nothing in it and no other address reference or icon. I unchecked Hide File Extensions, which made no difference. This happens to me a lot with instructions. I think I have a bad aura that computers can sense. Any help out there for this problem? By the way, how DO you enter a question??? I responded to this string because the issue was similar and it was the only "Reply" or related button I could find. Yes, I tried practice and instruction manual and they just say something like, "Go ahead and post your question," without saying (in a recognizable way) how.

Hello Challenger, not sure if you have found the fix for this - either way, here it is. 1) Close Palm Desktop - " THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT " 2) Go to C:\ProgramFiles\PalmOne\ and look for the profile you are using, the same one missing the addresses. 3) Now in the user profile (ie. John) you will find a folder named "address" in there you are looking for two files ( address.dat & address.bak) 4) Make a copy of those two files to a safe place in your Hard Drive. 5) Now we are back to the "address" folder - delete the address.dat file, and the address.bak file rename it to address.dat 6) Launch Palm Desktop - all your contacts should now be restored. If anyone has a question on how to do this - email me at german@gwebnet.com Good Luck!

Thank you for the reply and advice. I've printed out the message and filed it for reference. The problem - and solution - was so simple, I'm embarrassed to 'fess up. Somehow, I managed to activate "Hide private records." After finally contacting Palm Help, it took only a few minutes to find the problem source. I was very impressed with the light pen on-screen directions, showing me exactly where and what to click. Challenger
