I've been trying to get my TX to connect to a new Toshiba laptop.  I first tried to hotsync via USB and discovered on this forum why that wouldn't work - no 64-bit USB driver, apparently.  I read as much as I could find here, and tried everything I could, and I think I'm close to a solution, but I'm stuck.

I set up an ad-hoc network on the laptop and connected to it in the laptop's control panel>network and sharing center>connect to a network.  It shows the ad-hoc network as connected, "waiting for users."  When I scan for networks in the TX, it finds the ad hoc network, but won't connect to it.

In a Palm.com support link I found here, it said that I can't sync via wifi until I have synced via cable, which of course I can't do.  Is that my problem?  I'm thinking it's not; at least, not yet.  I need to establish the connection before I can attempt a wifi  hotsync.

Toshiba M505, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4MB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Palm Desktop by Access v6.2.2, Hotsync v7.0.2

Palm TX, Palm OS Garnet v5.4.9, Network Hotsync v4.0

Thanks in advance for any help I get...

Hello gnorts, Welcome to the Palm Support Community.

If you'll view the "sticky threads" above at the top of this section you'll spy a thread I wrote called "How to sync a TX with Vista64 via Wifi".  It's here:

http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=44299&jump=true

Instead of Ad-hoc, can you use infrastructure?

Palm seems to have no plans of supporting Windows 7 with its legacy devices, but we're hearing that Vista solutions seem to be working with Win7.

Thanks WyreNut! I upgraded my HP laptop from Vista 64 to Windows 7 64 and I was unable to hotsync my Palm TX via bluetooth. I followed your steps for wifi syncing and it worked great. I really like my Palm TX and I don't want to have to replace it because Palm does not want to support the device anymore.

Thanks Wyrenut!  I've set up the TX to connect to my wifi infrastructure network.  The TX connects to the network no problem, but it still won't connect to Palm Desktop.  I'm using the laptop's URL.  Is this because I have not done a hard-wired hotsync?  The Palm help website says I can't sync wirelessly until I have synced via a hardwire (USB) connection first.  Of course, I can't do this because of the lack of a 64-bit USB driver.

I imported all my calendar, contact and memo data from Palm Desktop v4.1.4 on the old computer to Desktop v6.2.2 on the new laptop, but I still can't sync.  Is there a way to fool the new Desktop into accepting a "first" hotsync via wifi?

A hard-wired sync is not necessary.  Since mine works fine, and a USB sync is impossible and I was never even tried one, I feel that point is moot.

What exactly is happening or not happening?

You mentioned using the "laptop's URL" - I assume you mean the IP address?  An URL has nothing to do with the numbers needed.  You'll need something like 192.168.0.xxx  (the last 3 numbers are whatever your laptop has been assigned.)

Are you sure the HotSync Manager is running?  You should see the little blue and red HotSync icon in the lower right tool tray on your computer.  If not,  go to your Start Button/All programs/Palm/HotSync Manager entry and run it.

Another suggestion:  Make an exception in your Firewall software for "HotSync.exe".

My "old" laptop is an ASUS EEE netbook running XP Home SP3.  That's the one running Desktop v4.1.4 that I've been syncing to via USB.  It's on the same wifi network, and I just entered its URL in the TX's hotsync and tried to connect.  No luck.  USB sync to the netbook works fine.

One roadblock after another.  I am being slowly driven insane...

OK, wrong term.  I meant "IP address." Yes, hotsync manager appears in the system tray (if that's what W7 calls it - next to the clock). I will enter the hotsync manager exe file in the firewall exception and try again.

OK.  Hotsync.exe is allowed in both firewalls.  Still no luck.  After I start a hotsync, the TX says, "Connecting with the desktop using Wi-Fi."  After about a minute, a "Hotsync Problem" box appears that says, "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established.  Please check your setup and try again."

Summary...

TX connects fine to wifi router but will not connect to desktop on either computer when they are connected to the router's wifi.

Netbook connects to the ad-hoc network set up on the new laptop.

TX will not connect to the ad-hoc network.  I noticed that the connection from the netbook to the ad-hoc network takes a minute or so while the laptop assigns a network address to the netbook.  The TX doesn't take nearly as long before it gives me the "connection failed" error message.  Is the TX timing out too early?  Can the timeout be changed?

Before we go on, I would suggest using the free "NVBackup" to make a perfect compressed copy of your TX placed on your SD card.  This will insure no data loss.  If you're already using it, Great!  If not, you can find it here:  NVBackup

Ok, let's review.  You are trying to sync via Wifi to your new Win7 laptop, correct?  And you have successfully installed Palm Desktop by Access version 6.2.2.

You've been following my guide from the "How to sync a TX to Vista64 via Wifi" thread.

The laptop is connected wirelessly to your router and can go online.  You've made the necessary setting changes in the Hotsync Manager (to make it use a "Network TCP/IP" connection).   HotSync Manager is present and running and has been allowed through the Firewall(s).   You've determined the exact IP address of the laptop by either using the DOS command   "ipconfig /all"  or by viewing the active connections list in your router's status pages, and entered the numbers correctly on the TX.

On your TX, you've opened the HotSync icon, and checked the pull-down menu:  Modem Sync prefs is set to "Network" and LANSync Prefs is set to "LANSync" (not Local Hotsync).

The TX has Wifi turned on, and is connected to your network.  Pressing the HotSync button on the TX's screen should initiate a connection to the laptop.

One glitch I ran into the other night.  Recently, I changed the encryption scheme on my router to WPA2 (AES) to gain speed with my /n laptop.  The TX can handle this since I installed the paid Wifi update on it.  It did begin to have problems completing a Wifi HotSync!    The laptop started the HotSync fine, but it ended before completion each time.  (The $6 update is not necessary to sync via Wifi.  Things worked well previously).

My solution?  Hard-wire into the router with a LAN cable.  I turned off the Wifi on the laptop via the switch, cabled into the router and found my new IP address.  I entered it into the TX and away we Synced!  :smileyhappy:

If you still have problems, it might require reinstalling Palm Desktop with all the precautions in place -- Admin prviledges, Anti Virus software turned off during the install, etc.  See if you can sync with the desktop before importing your data.

I know this method works, and several other users have chimed in on the sticky thread that Win7 works this way too!
