Jerry,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with your Treo after applying the 1.10 maintenance release. I've flashed up 4 Sprint Treo 700p smartphones at this point and all upgraded without issue. When applying these kinds of upgrades, it is important to follow Palm's directions to the letter.

As I stated before, there are some known issues with Windows Vista and Palm Desktop 4.1.4, 4.14E, and 4.2. One of those bugs is with the Install Tool.

If you are still having trouble with your Palm, I would call the Sprint support center and request that they send you a replacement Treo 700p since your problems started after installing the update.

Good luck,
Alan G

Hello Jerry.

Are you able to HotSync your Sprint Treo 700p with the 1.10 maintenance release to another Windows computer? Since Windows Vista isn't 100% compatible with the Palm Desktop 4.2 software that ships with the 700p at this point it is hard to tell if the problem is with the computer or with the Treo.

Alan G

I have no other PCs. My other one had a hard drive failure which prompted an early buy of a new PC.

Before I updated to 1.10 i didn't have any problems. Once I did update I have a host of issues. In fact none of my third party software works (Goosync..Chess...anything...but then I thikn I may have to reinstall but can't do that because I can't sync it). I basically have a stock Treo again, which can't communicate with anything.

PC vs Palm SW vs the Treo itself....either way its just a point of view. Then again once I updated to 1.10 (i was using a Vista machine to do this by the by), I did sync once last time, with no hitch, to get the backup off it. So it did work once before, but once I went to reinstall some sofware (IBM's JVM) it wouldn't work as stated previously. Thereafter it would start up then time out saying that it could not complete the sync. Now, like I said it won't connect at all. The Treo is looking but there is no communication going on.

I knew I shouldn't have updated until I studied more. I never experianced the issues every one said were in there before the patch.

A number of users, including me, have reported on this forum that they initially had limited but still valuable usability of Hotsync under Vista and 4.X versions of the former. However, also in a number of cases, including my own, they and I ran into difficulties. Specifically, it appears that attempts to reinstall Palm Desktop under Vista result in an unresponsive application. Palm is silent on the possibility, but I believe it may be due to a permissions conflict related to User Account Control and an inability of the MSI package that comes with Palm Desktop to back out changes to the registry and other key files.

Like hundreds, and possibly thousands of other loyal users of its products, I find Palm's continuing silence to be disconcerting. I hope it does not reflect a planned withdrawal of handheld devices from its product portfolio or worse, potential issues related to the firm's business viability and its ability to provide support services.

Julian Isitt

Victoria, BC

Julian wrote:

Like hundreds, and possibly thousands of other loyal users of its products, I find Palm's continuing silence to be disconcerting.

Actually, Palm hasn't been completely silent on this issue. They have indicated that the current versions of Palm Desktop (4.1.4, 4.1.4E, and 4.2) do work with limited functionality as you have already indicated.

Palm has also setup a Windows Vista and Office 2007 compatibility site for communicating to Windows Vista customers work arounds and Palm Desktop update status. The last word that we did hear from Palm is that they are working on an upgrade to Palm Desktop that will fully support Windows Vista. There should be a beta version of this upgrade this summer.

I don't work for Palm, so I don't know what the timing around "coming soon" and "this summer" really mean. All I can tell you is that I do know Palm is working to get a new version of Palm Desktop (and likely the HotSync Manager as well) out the door.

Alan G

Thanks. I tried calling Sprint. They sent me to Palm. Palm sent me back to Sprint. Its classic. Neither will uphold the warranty I still have (the thing is only 4 months old!!). I am seriously considering going to a windows based one.

I deal with software and hardware engineers at work as a Program Managaer so I am famaliar with the "not my problem" kind of attitude.

Trouble is I neither care nor have the energy at this point to keep on the phones until resolution. The way I see its both a Sprint and Palm issue. The OEM and the software company have a product. It doesn't work. Simple as that. Yet I can understand how, with a wide variety of hardware situations can come up.

I followed the instructions to the letter. Spent 4 hours doing it to make sure I understood. I read, re-read and read it again to make double sure.

Sounds like its an unforeseen circumstances and that they are trying to address it. Albeit slowly. I will dive into that site you mentioned, Alan.

Until then....I am not too happy.

My Treo700p worked fine with my Vista PC initially, then developed a mysterious problem where Vista just wouldn't recognize it as a USB device AT ALL. I was locked out for a couple weeks, then while having problems with another device connecting via USB, I found the following information, which seemed to "fix" the problem with my Treo. Immediately after doing the following, Vista again recognized my 700p and allowed me to synch.

It seemed to me, by the way, like it made sense to disconnect all USB devices before following the following instructions...

Sometimes USB issues in Vista are caused by a corrupted INFCACHE.1 file. This file stores the location of drivers and their INF files. This file is hidden, has restricted access, and can be found in c:\windows\inf.

You can also try the following steps to resolve this issue:

Delete the INFCACHE.1 file and it will force Windows to rebuild the INFCACHE.1 file the next time Windows searches for drivers. To delete this file, you have to set the security permissions of it to allow Full Control for the User Group Administrators or full control for your user account. Please follow the directions below:

Open a Windows Explorer window by right clicking on Start and then clicking on Explore.

In the address bar, type C:\windows\inf and press Enter.

Find and then right click on the file named INFCACHE.1.

Select Properties.

Click on the Security tab.

Click on Edit to edit the permissions of the file.

Click on Add to add User Groups.

Type Administrators in the User Groups field and click on OK.

Set Administrators to Full Control and click on OK.

Move or delete the file INFCACHE.1.

Reinstall a device to force Windows to rebuild the INFCACHE.1 file.

Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)
