Palm Centro Battery Drains!!!

My palm has been great for the first 2 weeks, but today it drained in literally 5 hours and I didn't use it for more than 3 text messages in that period of time!  From reading all the other postings related to the Palm Centro battery, it looks like Palm owes some customers free batteries!

Re: Palm Centro Battery Drains!!!

The Centro's battery is a lot smaller compared to the Treo line of devices. There are several things you should consider about the battery

1. bluetooth- when on this is a major battery drainer so when not in use disable
2. Voice command- If you have any voice command software this software has to constantly stay on, so when not using disable
3. Emails- If your device is set to automatically get email when it hits the server its going to constantly drain the battery because its constantly connecting. Try setting your email to an hour or manually.
4. Network- One of the biggest problems with any device is when you are in a a"fringe" network. If you are constantly jumping between a high speed and low speed network you are using up a ton of battery resources
5. On that same note, do know that a high speed network is always going to use more battery power
6. Instant messaging- If you have a im application and it is running in the background you are using power, disable when not in use
7. Other applications- Some third party applications are set to auto get updates. This means they are constantly connecting to their server every 10 seconds or less thus using a lot of battery power
8. Internet- Internet and wifi uses battery, if you are a heavy browser you are going to experience low battery life

These are the big ones. There is others I'm sure I am forgetting a couple, but if you are experiencing really low battery life I would look at your day to day activities and see if you are using a lot of battery power.

Re: Palm Centro Battery Drains!!!

So I was in the same situation as you, having great battery life on my centro (could get 2 days out of it no problem) until last night. All of the sudden the last half of the charge drained in less than 2 hours. I figured it was just a wierd glitch so I reset the phone and charged it completely overnight. I took it to work with me and after less than 5 hours away from the charger the battery was below 15%. I knew something was up so I ran to the Sprint store during lunch.

The tech support guy gave me the low down. They have realized why some Centros have been having poor battery life. The problem lies in the Sprint Email program and the centro. There has been an issue where the program gets stuck in a continuous loop trying to ping the email server for new emails. This continues to run and quick drains your battery. The current work around is to switch to the versa mail email program.

Sprint and Seven (the company who makes the program) are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. They do not have a date set yet but switch to versa mail for the time being. It seemed to work great for me as after I switched the remaining 15% of battery life barely drained for the rest of the afternoon.

Hope this helps everyone.

Re: Palm Centro Battery Drains!!!

I've used the phone for more than 3 months and understand pretty well what to expect with battery life.

Yesterday morning I found the phone was _completely discharged where the night before it had half a charge. I plugged it in - 4+ hours later saw the green light and unplugged it.

For the rest of the day the only time it came out of stand-by was to check if i'd missed any incoming calls. Bluetooth is off. No other usage of any sort.

This morning it was again, completely dischaged.

I've seen references online to problems with the email client but I don't have an email account setup...have never made an internet connection with the phone.

There is not visible damage (bubbling) to the battery or any other part of the phone for that matter.

What could be wrong?

Re: Palm Centro Battery Drains!!!

I realize your post is over 2 mo. old, but I am experiencing the same problem.  Did you ever find a solution?  My situation seems similar....worked just fine the first 6-8 weeks, don't use email or connect to the internet.

Originally, my battery drain seemed like it was happening every-other charge.  Now it won't hold a charge for more than a few hours.

My husband has the same phone w/no problems at all.  We even switched out the batteries between the two phone.  His still works just fine and mine won't hold a charge.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Palm Centro Battery Drains!!-any solution without the "humpback"

I have tried the extended Palm battery and it helps but the humpback shape/weight kind of destroys the utility of the small Centro form factor.

Has anyone found a STANDARD SIZE battery that packs more than 1150 milliamps (the standard power rating).  It seems that such a battery may exist but I can't find it.

The humback battery is 1850 milliamps, and about 1400 or 1500 milliamps in the standard size would really make a difference.

Anyone who finds it, please advise.

Re: Palm Centro Battery Drains!!-any solution without the "humpback"

I got extended battery also 2250Mah for 34 bucks. It is a bit thicker but it came with free back cover. I ve been testing it for a couple of weeks now and it works good. I have provided the link for anyone who is interested: http://www.megacapacity.com/15141.html

Re: Palm Centro Battery Drains!!!

perhaps that's why they're making the seemingly senseless move to kill of pcsmail now.  guess they figger it's better off to piss off all the people who use pcsmail instead of the many more who may not use it but still get terrible battery drain...
