I recently bought a Treo Pro made for Sprint off of Craigs List with the 1.03 firmware, which is the original one that was recalled. I have been using the device for about a week now and hanve no problems at all. I also compared it to a unit that was at the Sprint store (1.04), and everything looks exactly the same.
Can anybody confirm what was changed between 1.03 and 1.04? Also, are there any other ramifications if you have a 1.03 device?
Thanks in advance for your help.

you should go back to the store where you purchase it and have the device replaced. the correct firmware should be 1.04 not 1.03.

Can you not just update the firmware? With the old treo you just downloaded the new firmware and installed it to the phone, the phone rebooted et viola.
My sucker is unlocked and buggy as help. Tired of taking the back out to remove the battery, Windows kills it and just makes it too complicated and too **bleep** small.

The 1.04 firmware for Sprint was on the original equipment, so it isn't posted as an update on the Palm support site. The poster might have to wait for a 1.05 release if Sprint won't help.

I bought mine on eBay and it was having problems, freezes in certain cases, I was unable to get the roaming list updated, and a number of other bugs. It was not just remaining memory at boot, but the way memory was handled on program exits. After going back and forth with Sprint it turns out mine was one of those recalled that someone must have gotten a hold off and sold a bunch on eBay.
Finally I was able to get Sprint to give me an update after going up a few tiers in support, but I had to drive 40 miles to my local store, pay for parking and spent an hour in the store. The eBayer cost me $100 of my time. He $crewed me.
Good news is that the problems with my handset are gone. Reception is better, and the programs I was running no longer cause a memory shortage error, and I can update my roaming list.
I don't think this is Palm's fault. From what I was told all of these early models were supposed to be returned to Sprint, not Palm for an update and the ones that ended up on eBay were gotten by the sellers for free because they were credited by Palm as lost or something. So Palm has them flagged by serial number for no support because Palm got no money for them.
Your Craigslist seller is the shady operator as was my eBay seller.
Good luck with the amount of time and effort but Sprint will hook you up with the new version, it will fix a number of problems. Reception for voice and data will be better and you will see more free memory.

All of the problems that you listed have been reported in both the 1.03 and 1.04 versions. I was talking to someone on another board that has Alltel, and all of their units come with a 1.03 firmware version, which I find interesting.
I haven't even tried to go to a sprint store to get it updated. Did you go to a special store or something? I'm in NYC and have like 5 Sprint stores in a 1 mile radius of me (including the stupid flatiron one that is on all those black and white sprint commercials lol).

All the problems I was having wth recalled 1.03 disappeared with 1.04.
The exact same programs in combination no longer freeze the Pro. I can see for a fact that I have more memory remaining, up to 10 mb with the same programs. The 1.04 gave me not just more memory after boot, but seems to handle the memory available better. Looks like a fix of a memory leak.
Googling I see no claims of 1.04 freezing.
I went to a Sprint offical repair facility. Not all stores do repairs. It took me qite about of time with Sprint tech support for them to set this up.
Many things are improved. Reception improved. OTA updates thgat would not work at all now work. Programs run better. More memory remains. All facts.
Sprint tech told me that recall and update involved over ten fixes from small to important between 1.03 and 1.04.
I called Alltel and they say there's are 1.04 Perhaps there are recalled Alltels being sold by scam artists on eBay as well?

The 3 people that I have come across that have Alltel's Treo Pro all have firmware version 1.03. Being that the Alltel phone was released BEFORE the Sprint recalled phones, I don't see how they could have 1.04. Alltel may very well be using 1.04 NOW, but I confirmed that they never recalled the 1.03 units.
