Finally Apple Blocks Palm Pre iTunes Syncing

Palm Pre syncing with iTunes is indeed kaput. At least on this Pre user's Mac, iTunes sync isn't working after the 8.2.1 update.* According to Apple's surprisingly forthcoming release notes:

iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple Devices.

We were wondering if this day would come after the back and forth between Apple and Palm on the issue.  It's as-yet unclear exactly what method Apple is using to block Pre sync, but we suspect is wasn't easy.  ...Which means we also suspect it might not be easy for Palm to turn it back on.

Well, webOS developers, a hard choice is in front of you.  We already know you're awesome, now you just need to decide whether you direct your awesomeness at this cat-and-mouse game or focus on other things (like custom notification sounds).

*Quick update: plugging the Pre in does bring iTunes 8.2.1 to the front as though it wanted to work, but then iTunes simply doesn't show the Pre in the sidebar.

What happens if you just don't update iTunes?

I will sell my i-pod touch and never update my iTunes.

Please do give Kudos (What are Kudos?), when they are warranted... Thanks!

Let's continue this discussion and try to keep apple bashing to a minimum, if we can.  And try to make this more about alternatives.  :smileyhappy:

As others suggest elsewhere, you can also use DoubleTwist

EDIT: Added link to DoubleTwist.

Interesting,

Correct me if I am wrong (I am sure someone will).

Palm did make an issue about how the phone will sync with iTunes.  Seems they should have checked with Apple.

Thankfuly other methods do exist.

** EDIT

Why would anyone blame Apple for this, it is clear that Palm broke even the USB specification by allowing the device to incorrectly say it was an iPod.

** EDIT

Yep, here is the information http://investor.palm.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=386488

Palm media sync is a feature of webOS that synchronizes seamlessly with iTunes, giving you a simple and easy way to transfer DRM-free music, photos and videos to your Palm Pre.(2) Simply connect Pre to your PC or Mac via the USB cable, select "media sync" on the phone, and iTunes will launch on your computer desktop. You can then choose which DRM-free media files to transfer.

Re: Finally Apple Blocks Palm Pre iTunes Syncing

Ok,

I would like to know how this is marked solved?

Functionality that is to exist no longer works, without work arounds.  This is not solving it, solving it would be Palm working with Apple to allow syncing without downgrading or using 2 bits of software, or some other 3rd party application.

This is not solved, it has just been worked around.

This is patently untrue.  The USB specification lays out no requirements about the Vendor and Device IDs.  The Device ID can be anything -- it is assigned by the vendor.  The Vendor ID is only specified to be assigned by the USB-IF.

That being said, when you apply for a Vendor ID from the USB-IF, they have some wording about not using others' Vendor IDs.  But this isn't a spec violation.  At most it is a violation of the agreement to purchase a Vendor ID.  That is something for the USB-IF to complain about, not Apple, since the USB-IF claims to own all the Vendor IDs.
